Potions & Tea Guide

Buff crafting sits beside the kitchen in Island Beekeeper. Potions turn specialty honeys into exploration tools, while tea from a barrel softens cold weather on high or snowy islands. Launch-week patches rewrote several recipes and fixed broken outputs — this page follows the official Steam notes for July 29 fixes and hotfix 1.01.1.

Why Brew Instead of Only Shipping Honey?

Shipping jars raises reputation, but potions and tea solve problems that jars alone cannot:

• Traversal safety — speed and resistance buffs shorten risky Medocycle legs
• Cold islands — tea’s cold resistance lasts longer after 1.01.1
• Journal clarity — bee and potion pages were expanded so ingredients are easier to track
• Honey sinks — swamp and other specialty honeys become useful even when Earth orders want classic jars

Keep a small “buff shelf” near your Workbench so co-op partners can grab tea before a snow route without opening every chest.

Potion Crafting Basics

1. Unlock or discover the potion station / recipe entries shown in the Journal (J).
2. Gather the listed honey variety plus secondary reagents (flowers, swamp materials, or glassware depending on the recipe).
3. Craft once and confirm the output name — do not assume launch-day behavior still applies.
4. Store potions in a labeled chest; drink before leaving the home island when possible.

Swamp Honey in the Journal

A July 29 developer update states that Regular Honey was replaced with Swamp Honey in the potion recipes shown in the Journal. If an older screenshot still shows Regular Honey, trust the in-game Journal after patching. Swamp Honey ties potion progress to Swamp Island exploration — bring empty jars and a smoker when you farm that biome.

Speed Potion Bug (Fixed in 1.01.1)

At launch, crafting any potion could always produce a Speed Potion. Hotfix 1.01.1 fixed that mapping so each recipe yields its intended buff. If you still only receive Speed Potions:

• Verify game files and confirm 1.01.1+ is installed
• Re-open the Journal recipe page and craft from the listed entry
• Avoid mixing pre-patch queued crafts; clear the station and craft fresh

Speed Potions remain useful for sprinting across large apiaries or racing a delivery drone window — they are just no longer the only result.

Tea, Barrels, and Cold Resistance

Tea is the cold-weather counterpart to potions.

How to brew

• Collect tea leaves from appropriate plants or island forage
• Process them in a barrel (not the open campfire)
• Bottle or carry the finished tea before a cold expedition

Patch notes that matter

• 1.01.1 fixed players being unable to make tea from tea leaves in a barrel
• 1.01.1 also made tea provide a longer duration of cold resistance

Drink tea before riding into wind or snow — the Medocycle reacts to weather, and cold islands punish underprepared trips. Pair tea with warm cooked food and purified water so you are not burning buffs while starving.

Blueprint Gate for Glass and Decor

Potion and tea setups often need glassware or decorative stations. Hotfix 1.01.1 added a pop-up when you try to build decorations or glass structures without the required blueprints. If placement fails with a new notification, you are missing a blueprint unlock — not fighting a collision bug. Progress orders and exploration until the Journal shows the blueprint, then retry.

5. Keep blueprint-locked glass builds for after the unlock popup stops blocking you.
