Controls & Keybinds | Island Beekeeper Wiki
Complete Island Beekeeper controls guide — movement, building, beekeeping tools, journal, inventory shortcuts, and co-op input tips for PC. (Updated Jul 2026).
Controls & Keybinds
Island Beekeeper is built for keyboard and mouse on PC. The control scheme is intentionally simple so you can focus on beekeeping, farming, and exploration rather than memorizing dozens of hotkeys. This guide lists every confirmed binding from the demo and launch build, explains when each input matters, and links to gameplay systems that depend on specific keys.
If you are still in your first session, pair this page with the Getting Started walkthrough and the dedicated Honey Production guide once your first hive is running.
Movement & Camera
| Action | Default Input |
|---|---|
| Move forward / back / strafe | W / S / A / D |
| Look around | Mouse |
| Jump (where terrain allows) | Space |
| Sprint (when stamina allows) | Left Shift |
Movement is first-person. Narrow island paths and apiary layouts reward slow, deliberate walking — especially when carrying fragile jars or standing near cliff edges. In co-op, each player moves independently on split-screen, so coordinate who sprints ahead on the Medocycle and who stays at base.
Interaction & Tools
| Action | Default Input |
|---|---|
| Primary interact / use tool | Left-click |
| Secondary action / alternate use | Right-click |
| Quick inventory transfer | Shift-click |
| Open inventory | Tab or I (check in-game prompts) |
| Drop / place carried item | Follow on-screen placement prompts |
Left-click is your workhorse: chopping wood, swinging the bug net, turning the honey extractor crank, and talking to stations. Right-click often handles alternate modes such as canceling placement or secondary tool functions. When a demo player reported confusion about filling jars from buckets, the fix is usually interacting with the extractor while holding an empty jar — not the bucket directly.
Always craft a bug net before queen-catching runs and equip it from your hotbar before breaking wild hives. Missing the timing window after opening a hive wastes the opportunity, as explained in the Bees & Hybrids guide.
Building & Crafting Menus
| Action | Default Input |
|---|---|
| Hammer / build menu | H |
| Rotate placement preview | R |
| Confirm placement | Left-click |
| Cancel placement | Right-click or Esc |
Press H to open the hammer menu. This is not the same as crafting at the workbench — H is for placing structures (hives, walls, post station pieces) in the world. Use Q and R to rotate pieces before confirming. New players often confuse workbench recipes with build-mode placement; keeping H separate reduces that friction.
Workbench crafting uses its own station interface when you stand at the bench. Plan your base so the workbench, storage, and first hives are within a short walk — see Crafting & Building for recipe order.
Journal & UI
| Action | Default Input |
|---|---|
| Journal / quests / tips | J |
| Pause menu / save | Esc |
The journal (J) tracks active orders, tutorial nudges, and objectives that environmental notes do not fully explain. Early Steam playtest feedback highlighted that scattered papers alone are not enough to learn progression order — check J after every major milestone (first honey jar, post station built, Meadow Cycle Station unlocked).
From the pause menu you can manual save in addition to autosaves triggered by orders, travel, and time skips. If you experiment with risky bee breeding combinations, save before major changes.
Beekeeping-Specific Actions
These actions do not always have unique keys — they use the standard interact buttons with the correct tool equipped:
- Break wild hive — equip axe or hammer, left-click hive, switch to bug net immediately.
- Calm bees with smoker — equip smoker, use near hive before pulling frames.
- Remove honey frames — interact with hive inventory, move full frames to extractor.
- Extract honey — place frames in extractor, hold empty jar, turn crank (left-click hold).
- Load drone at post station — interact with station inventory, place honey, confirm shipment.
Full pipeline details live on the Honey Production page. Audio settings also include a bee volume slider — lower it once you run a dozen hives simultaneously.
Medocycle Controls
Mount the Medocycle by interacting at your base parking spot. Travel Mode and Flight Mode switch through the vehicle UI (see on-screen prompts when wings are attached). Honey fuel is loaded from inventory before departure — running dry mid-flight is dangerous on elevated routes, covered in the Medocycle Guide.
Co-op Input Notes
Local co-op supports up to four players on one PC. Each player needs a control device; split-screen divides the display. Sleep in a bed advances time for everyone, so agree before any player triggers night skip. Task division — one player on farming, one on bees, one exploring — works best when each person knows H vs workbench crafting independently.
Accessibility & Settings
Steam lists configurable controls for Island Beekeeper. Open Settings from the pause menu to adjust bindings, mouse sensitivity, and audio (including bee buzzing volume). The game ships with interface subtitles in eleven languages; voice audio language depends on the build but UI localization covers English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Japanese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Polish, and Ukrainian per the Steam store page.
Quick Reference Checklist
Before leaving your starter island, confirm you can perform each action without checking the menu:
- Move, jump, and open inventory
- Craft at the workbench and place a hive with H
- Open journal (J) and read the current objective
- Catch a queen with the bug net
- Extract one jar of honey with the smoker and extractor
- Load honey into the post station drone
Mastering these inputs turns the first hour from confusion into a smooth loop. For launch-day patches and balance changes, see Updates & Patch Notes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Can I rebind keys in Island Beekeeper?
Yes. The game lists configurable controls in its accessibility options on Steam. Check Settings after launch to adjust bindings that feel uncomfortable on your keyboard layout.
What key opens the build menu?
Press H to open the hammer/build menu. This is separate from the workbench crafting screen and is where you place structures like hives, walls, and stations.
How do I check my current objectives?
Press J to open the journal. It tracks active orders, tutorial hints, and progression reminders when scattered notes on islands are not enough.
How does inventory quick-transfer work?
Shift-click moves items quickly between your inventory and open containers such as chests, hives, or the honey extractor. This saves time during harvest loops.
Do co-op players use separate keyboards?
Local co-op assigns each player their own keyboard or controller on split-screen. Player 1 typically uses WASD while additional players use their assigned inputs.
