Bee Automation and Alchemy

Players search “how to unlock automation” almost as often as they search for bees. In Island Beekeeper, automation is not a single switch. You visit other islands, catch new species, unlock the Alchemy Table through Post Station bee quests, then Mutate pairs in the Apiary Lab. Each mutated helper takes a role in the apiary so you spend less time hauling frames by hand.

This page is the how-to for that loop. Adjacent hive breeding still exists — see Bee Breeding — but mutation at the Alchemy Table is the path the community uses for named automation bees.

What Automation Actually Does

Mutated species do not replace the smoker, extractor, or jars. They help: moving frames, tending a hive type, or keeping a colony from stalling while you fly the Medocycle. Launch notes and hotfix 1.01.1 called out rare bees that stopped doing automation tasks; 1.01.2 stopped bees from vanishing visually while those tasks ran. If helpers look idle, update first, then rebuild the hive on a fresh foundation.

Automation still needs:

  • A placed hive of the mutated species (often a Bee Place blueprint from orders)
  • Flowers or the correct biome nearby
  • Frames the colony can work
  • A smoker pass if the hive is agitated

Unlock Path (Search Intent)

Community write-ups and developer replies agree on this order:

  1. Play on the Main Island until the Post Station is usable (restored after the July 29 missing-station bug).
  2. Complete bee quests listed at the station. Those quests, not a hidden vendor, unlock the Alchemy Table.
  3. Travel — automation wants species you only find on other islands. Forest, swamp, night, eastern, and snow lines all feed later mutations.
  4. Open the Alchemy Table → Apiary Lab and choose Mutate with the required pair.
  5. Place the new bee in its hive. The hive blueprint often arrives as a Post Station order reward.

You cannot mutate what you have not discovered. Catch queens with a net, keep a spare of each parent, and read the Journal pages that expanded after the July 29 pass.

Use adjacent breeding to fill honey variety. Use Mutate when a Journal or quest names a helper. Do not expect every meadow-forest hybrid to automate the extractor.

Bee Place Blueprints

Several mutated bees need a dedicated Bee Place (species hive). Eastern and Night hives were unbuildable at launch until bamboo and dark wood recipes were restored; Snow Bee and Night Bee placement broke again and were fixed in 1.01.1 / 1.01.2. After 1.01.2, Eastern bees swarm to another hive when the colony hits max size — build a second Eastern hive before the overflow.

If a blueprint is missing, fill more orders instead of hunting a world pickup. The Fishing Rod taught the same lesson: the studio moved some crafts to the Workbench permanently.

Practical Automation Setup

  • Cluster helper hives near the extractor and honey shelves, not on a distant cliff.
  • Keep one manual hive so you still understand the honey loop when a helper idles after a patch.
  • After 1.01.6, the Honey Extractor can stop working again — verify files and re-seat frames before assuming automation is broken.
  • In co-op, assign one player to mutations while another runs trader and seed errands. Guest meters sticking was fixed in 1.01.6.

Common Failures

Table not there — Finish bee quests at the Main Island Post Station. The station itself was missing on some launch saves and had to be restored.

Mutate greyed out — You lack a parent species or the pair is wrong. Visit more biomes; see Bee Species.

Helper does nothing — 1.01.1 rare-bee automation fix. Smoke the hive, confirm flowers, reload on a current build.

Bees invisible while working — Fixed in 1.01.2. If it returns, verify files.

No Bee Place — Complete Post Station orders for that species’ blueprint.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How do I unlock automation in Island Beekeeper?

Discover new bee species on other islands, complete bee quests at the Main Island Post Station to unlock the Alchemy Table, then Mutate pairs in the Apiary Lab and place the result in its Bee Place hive.

Where is the Alchemy Table?

It unlocks from Post Station bee quests on the Main Island. The station itself had to be restored after a launch-week load bug — update and revisit the pad if the table never appeared.

Is mutating the same as crossbreeding two hives?

No. Adjacent hives can still produce hybrid eggs. Mutate at the Alchemy Table is the quest-gated path that creates named automation helpers.

Why did my automation bees stop working?

Hotfix 1.01.1 restored rare-bee tasks; 1.01.2 fixed disappearing sprites. Update Steam, smoke the hive, and check the Honey Extractor after 1.01.6 if frames no longer process.
